‘E ako ki te ora | Learn to live’

Rutherford Junior High School offers a range of performing arts subjects, including music, kapa haka, mau rakau and band. These subjects help students develop their creative talents, build confidence and self-esteem, improve teamwork and communication skills, and enhance problem-solving and critical thinking abilities. They are also a fun and engaging way to learn and grow. The school believes that these performing arts subjects supports creation of a well-rounded education that prepares students for success in all areas of life.

  Kapa Haka

Rutherford Junior High School has a new Māori Performing  Arts group ‘Ngā Pūkarukaru o te Awa Tipua’. Our students,  with staff, have performance practice twice a week. The students learn kapa haka performance skills including vocal training and stage presence using Māori traditional dance and movement. If you have a child who is keen on performing on stage, then this group is certainly an option.

  Band

The Rutherford Junior High School Band has a history of regional and national success. We have won  1st place in the regional awards in August 2023 and we placed 3rd in New Zealand at the Smoke-Free Tangata Beats National Finals. We have won regional BandQuest 5 years straight and came third in the nationals in 2018. Our teacher has professional experience in the field of music and brings his extensive skills and knowledge to the fore as he draws the best from our students. If your child has a gift with singing and or playing an instrument or the desire to learn musical theory and would love to gain experience in a band then this option will be great.

 Mau Rakau

An exciting initiative aimed at helping our ākonga (learners) develop confidence, learn their place in the world, and build their physical and emotional wellbeing.

Mau Rakau is a traditional martial art based on the values, protocols, and practices of the Māori toa (warrior).
