Rutherford Junior High School provides a wide range of sporting opportunities that all students are encouraged to participate in. Sport assists students with developing skills associated with teamwork, cooperation and leadership. Participation in sport also offers the opportunity to strive for excellence and to mix with a range of fellow students from across the school. Parents and caregivers who are able to assist as coaches or managers are encouraged to do so, please contact our Sports Co-odanator or school office for further information.

Super sports
The Super Sport Competition is exclusive to intermediate schools in the Wairarapa, Manawatū, Horowhenua, and Whanganui Regions. It aims to provide a platform for our top athletes to compete inter-school. We believe that participating in this competition fosters:
- high-level skill development
- understanding and application of the six principles of fair play
- a strong sense of pride in representing one’s school
- the cultivation of high standards in attitude, behavior, and sports uniform
